Gujarat Tourism - Luna Crater

Gujarat has many places inviting tourists to visit, from Somnath Mahadev Temple to Gir National park. Not only the state provides abundant places for every tourists interest but also amazing food options.

The Luna structure, an impact crater, is located in India's Gujarat State. In the Kutch district of Northwest India, in a grassland called the Banni Plains. It remains one of the unique attractions of the state. To the north lies The Great Rann Of Kutch, a white salt desert. Attracting tourists all year round and mainly for the famous Rann of Kutch Utsav. The Luna Crater often contains water.

Researchers in the dry season in May 2022 collected samples from the structure. The scientists detected several minerals that are not found on earth in the rocks and sediments. These are the very rare minerals from under the extreme high temperature pressures generated when a meteorite hits the earths ground. The researchers also found concentrations of the element Iradium, that was found in high concentrations. Iradium is a silvery-white, brittle, transition metal and is one of the rarest elements on earth's crust.

The plant remnants on the site after Radiocarbon dating shows presence of silt. And it was determined that the impact occured about 6900 years ago.

The Impact Craters are rare on Earth. The Earth Impact Database confirms fewer than 200 structures from around the world. Many of the meteorites that survive the trip through the earth's atmosphere are splashed down into the water. This is the reason for having less amount of craters on the Earth's surface.

Sometimes evidence of the meteorites (fallen on land) may be erased by wind, water and plate tectonics.

Luna Crater measures approximately 1.8 kilometers in width and its outer rim rises about 6 meters above the crater floor.

What Is An Impact Crater -

An Impact crater is formed when an object like an asteroid or meteorite crashes into the surface of a large solid object or surface like a planet. And for the formation of a true impact crater the object should be traveling in extremely fast speed i.e. many thousands of miles per hour.

It immediately vaporizes and creates enormous shockwaves through the ground that melts and recrystallizes the rock. All left is a big  circular hole in the ground and some seriously mangled rocks.

Examples of Impact Crater -

Meteor Crater or Barringer Crater in Arizona

Tycho Crater in the moons Southern Hemisphere is believed to be 108 million years old.

Vredefort Crater in South Africa is the largest known Impact Crater on Earth. Around 2 billion years old.
